Public Swimming Pools and Public Bathing Beaches

Public Swimming Pool Rules are applicable throughout Ohio. They were created to establish minimum standards for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of these facilities in order to protect the public from injury, minimize the potential for disease transmission and provide a safe and healthy aquatic recreational environment. The rules pertain to public pools, public spas, and special-use pools, but not private residential pools. (A private residential pool is one located at a dwelling housing no more than three families and used exclusively by the residents and their non-paying guests.) Unlike Public Swimming Pools, public bathing beach waters are typically untreated and are not regulated by state rules but locally adopted Bathing Beach Regulations. Many of the same sanitary and safety concerns addressed in the Public Swimming Pool Rules are also addressed in the Bathing Beach Regulations, but there are also additional routine sampling requirements. Throughout the swimming season, public beaches are sampled by the Stark County Health Department every other week. If test results exceed certain levels, the operator must post signs educating the public of the risk and may be closed if bacterial counts are above safe exposure levels.

Campgrounds

Campground rules are applicable throughout Ohio were created to establish minimum standards for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of these facilities in order to protect the public from injury, minimize the potential for disease transmission, and provide a safe and healthy recreational environment. A campground includes any location where five or more portable camping units (tents, campers, RV’s) are placed. Temporary campgrounds, set up for special events, are also required to obtain a license.
