The Stark County Sanitary Engineer is appointed by the Board of Stark County Commissioners who receive their authority from Section 6117 of the Ohio Revised Code. The Board established a unified metropolitan sewer district in 1975, combining a number of small districts that had started as early as 1928. Responsibilities of the district include facilities design, construction oversight, administration, management, operation and maintenance of the system, billing and revenue collection.
Currently, the sanitary sewer portion of the district consists of over 765 miles of mainline sewer lines, ranging in size from 8-inch to 66-inch. The system includes more than 50,000 connections consisting of residential, commercial and industrial accounts. Eighty five pump stations and 6 wastewater treatment plants are currently operated and maintained by the district.
The district established a water utility in 1990 in Lake Township and it currently consists of more than 2,800 accounts and includes over 53 miles of water lines.
